MD-AEP hosted a welcome reception, at the Banneker Douglas Museum in Annapolis, Maryland, for a
15-member Beijing Municipal Water Delegation on January 14.  The event brought together leading Maryland stakeholders from government, business and academia to welcome our friends from Beijing and develop relationships for future partnerships.  The delegation was visiting Maryland to receive a training program on water systems management through the University of Maryland's Institute for Global Chinese Affairs.

MD-AEP to Highlight Maryland Water Expertise at Singapore's
June 23-25 Water Convention

The Maryland-Asia Environmental Partnership (MD-AEP) is a supporting international organization of Singapore International Water Week (SIWW), taking place from June 23-25 in Singapore.  MD-AEP President Peter Gourlay will be showcasing MD-AEP's stakeholder expertise in addressing various public-private intersections of the water cycle continuum and highlighting opportunities for business partnerships at SIWW's North American Business Forum.  MD-AEP is a strong supporter of SIWW and encourages companies to join this year's event which is projected to draw over 10,000 delegates.  Last year's forum drew 8,500 delegates from 79 countries and $270 million in water deals were inked at the event.  Click here to to see more about this important global water summit.

Vietnam's Ambassador to the U.S. Highlights Environment
as Top Priority at MD-AEP Forum

Washington D.C.  June 2, 2009-- Last Thursday, over 50 executives came together to hear Vietnam's Ambassador to the U.S. Le Cong Phung provide opening remarks at MD-AEP's "Public-Private Dialogue on Environmental Business Opportunities in Vietnam" forum.  The Ambassador discussed the evolution of the U.S.-Vietnam relations from 40 years ago, "when we were enemies," to today where both nations are now collaborating on business and security issues. Attendees also heard insights from NOAA, EPA and USTDA on U.S.-Vietnam bilateral efforts for water and energy partnerships and U.S. grant funding; insights from Washington Labs, the US ASEAN Business Council, Whiteford Taylor Preston and the American National Standards Institute regarding Vietnam's recent joining of WTO and its impact on the environment and insights on Vietnam's environmental needs and business opportunities from GW's Sigur Center, I.M. Systems Group, Camp Dresser and McKee and Meiwah International Holdings. MD-AEP Maryland-India Environmental Forum Highlights Partnership Opportunities

On April 21, MD-AEP co-hosted the "Maryland-India Environmental Partnerships" forum with Montgomery County, Maryland government featuring a public-private dialogue on India's environmental needs, grant funding opportunities and Montgomery County's sustainability approaches which could provide relevant models in India.  GE Healthcare, SunEdison, Washington Labs, AERES Global TB Vaccine Fund, Alliance Biosciences and others heard from MD-AEP's India Representative David Foster, a Senior Advisor to the Administrative Staff College, Jane Nishida, Senior Environmental Institutional Specialist for South Asia at the World Bank, Henry Steingas, Regional Director for South and Southeast Asia from the U.S. Trade Development Agency and key environmental protection and economic development officials from the County government. 

Zephyr Environmental Corporation's Middle East Work Featured

MD-AEP featured Zephyr Environmental Corporation at the Patuxent Research Refuge on April 14 as is part of the Environmental Leadership Series. The forum showcased Zephyr's ground-breaking environmental projects in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia.  “I’ve been working in this region for over 30 years and I’ve been deeply impressed with the business savvy that Zephyr has demonstrated in winning these leading edge projects,” said Mac McClelland, President and CEO of Center House Ltd and MD-AEP’s Representative in the Middle East, based in Dubai. MD-AEP Showcases Battelle's Global Environmental Expertise

BattelleGroupPhoto.jpgOn March 31, Battelle was showcased at MD-AEP's fourth Environmental Leadership Series event at the Battelle Eastern Science and Technology Center in Aberdeen, Maryland.   Battelle has a growing presence in Asia with offices in Japan, Korea, India and Malaysia and research and development work in climate change, remediation, water, and process engineering. As the world's largest non-profit independent research and development organization, Battelle conducts $5.2 billion in global R&D annually through contract research, laboratory management and technology commercialization.  See press release here.

MD-AEP Showcases University of Maryland ESSIC Climate Change Expertise to Leaders from 40 Business, Science and Technology Organizations

Maryland's environmental leadership was showcased on March 24 at the University of Maryland's Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) as leaders from 40 organizationsjoined the Maryland-Asia Environmental Partnership's (MD-AEP) third Environmental Leadership Series Forum.  The forum helped to showcase ESSIC, one of Maryland’s and the nation’s, great environmental assets.  The Center’s reputation for scientific excellence has been well established through its collaborative partnerships with the Chinese Academy of Science, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, DOE and NOAA.  Within a 5-mile radius of ESSIC, the co-located DOE Joint Global Change Research Institute, the adjacent NOAA National Center for Weather and Climate Prediction and the NASA Flight Center will soon represent the “largest concentration of earth scientists in the world,” according to Dr. Antonio Busalacchi, Founding Director of ESSIC. MD-AEP's Environmental Leadership Series Goes to Coca-Cola Enterprises

On February 26, MD-AEP's Environmental Leadership Series featured Coca-Cola Enterprises at the Coca-Cola Bottling plant in Baltimore, USA.  Over 40 executives from industry, academia, government and non-government organizations visited the plant to hear about the firm's global sustainability initiatives.  Coca-Cola executives highlighted the company's commitment to sustainability through its implementation of a wide array of targets and goals for sustainable environmental practices, including water stewardship, energy and resource conservation.  "I thought the Coca-Cola presentation was absolutely outstanding," said MD-AEP Board Member Michael Curley and Founder of the International Center for Environmental Finance. "Their approach to CRS is so comprehensive and well thought through.  It really is a model for corporate America," he said.  See press release on the event here

On October 23rd, over 150 business, academic, government and non-profit executives were drawn together at Maryland's premier business club to hear from luncheon keynote speaker, Khoo Teng Chye, Chief Executive of Singapore's Public Utilities Board, Maryland Chancellor William E. Kirwan and top executives.  The forum highlighted Singapore's water model for sustainable water management and also provided Maryland perspectives on applicable lessons-learned in water management, new technologies, financial resources, and sustainability efforts which could be mobilized to help address Asia's water management and technology needs. MD-AEP President Peter Gourlay seen here with Professor Tommy Koh, Singapore Ambassador-At-Large, on the opening day of Singapore International Water Week.  MD-AEP signed a letter of cooperation with the Singapore Public Utilities Board (PUB) to support their recent June 23-27 global water summit and was recognized as one of the twelve international "supporting organizations" of the event.

MD-AEP partnered with the Regional Manufacturing Institute and EPA to organize a Greening the Supply Chain forumto highlight the importance greening corporate supply chains. The June Baltimore forum drew over two hundred business, government and academic leaders who came to hear U.S. Maryland Senator Ben Cardin, the EPA and leading multinational corporations including General Motors, Johnson Controls, Baxter International and Steelcase provide insights the green supply chain movement. Stay tuned for MD-AEP’s Greening the Supply Chain initiative as it is launched in Asia in 2009.

MD-AEP Draws Attention to Philippines Watershed
In recognition of Earth Day, MD-AEP President Peter Gourlay presented a $2500 donation to the Water Environment Association of the Philippines (WEAP) for helping preserve the Malabanban Watershed in San Pablo city. Edwardo B. Principe, Regional IV Director of the Philippines Department of Environment and Natural Resources thanked the MD-AEP during an Earth Day ceremony attended by over 50 community stakeholders for the support as 1000 new tree seedlings were planted in the watershed. The tree planting is critical to addressing the void left from illegal logging and slash and burn activities that have occurred in the area and helps to assure preservation of the city's water supply. "This tree planting effort will not only enhance the watershed, but also helps address climate change as part of our national tree planting initiative," said Principe.
